Amazon.com Product Description
With the i850, Nextel and Motorola continue their tradition of offering powerful handsets that help folks get the job done. With a built-in VGA camera, multimedia messaging, voice dialing, a speakerphone, and support for Nextel's legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie service, this phone is designed to deliver great functionality in a stylish, easy-to-use package.

Take a closer look at the i850's functions.
Design
The i850's clamshell form factor sports a very large, 176 x 220 TFT color display with 262,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover of the handset features a supplementary, 96 x 32, monochrome display that displays time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The phone's VGA (640 x 480) camera unit is placed just above this display. The speakerphone is located on the rear of the phone, while the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone's control pad features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions, and there's also a 2.5-millimeter headset jack for connecting a hands-free headset.

Calling Features
The i850's built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert, and more polyphonic ringtones can be added via download from the Nextel Online service. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names, while a built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. And if you have an emergency, the i850's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i850 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone, or with entire groups of Direct Connect users. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America, Canada and Latin America. With the i850's powerful Direct Talk function you can also communicate in walkie-talkie mode when you're not even connected to the network. The system works anywhere, anytime between compatible phones within a range of up to 6 miles (range will vary based on terrain and conditions). Direct Talk provides a reliable back-up communications tool in times of emergency, network outage, or when traveling to remote areas not under Nextel coverage. And last but not least, the i850 features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The i850 features MMS-based support for mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text, images and audio messaging. When used with the phone's built-in camera, MMS (multimedia messaging service) messaging opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit -- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i850, as well. Nextel's optional Nextel Online package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Nextel Online also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone. Also, because the i850 is GPS-enabled, you can use Nextel's location-based safety services like Mobile Locator, which allows you to locate a friend or family member's phone location at anytime, right from your computer. And finally, the i850 ships with a calendar, a voice memo application, and a time and date clock.

Imaging and Entertainment
The i850's 640 x 480 camera is enhanced by the phone's Media Center application, which allows you to easily store, browse and send your of photos. The i850 is also packed with a number of Java applications. TeleNav for audible driving directions is included, as is 1KTV multimedia for news (both require a subscription). Preloaded games include Zuma, Block Breaker and Texas Hold'em. More game downloads are available via the Nextel Online service.

Vital Statistics
The Motorola i850 weighs 4.32 ounces and measures 3.46 x 1.85 x 1.14 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 245 minutes of digital talk time, and up to 70 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the IDEN 800 frequency. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

4 out of 5 stars Meh..Not Bad   May 22, 2008
I need a Nextel for my work so this was my "step up" from old Nextel (i560, worthless piece of crap). So far no real complaints other than the battery life seems a little conservative. Has good screen size and resolution, much better than my old one. Browser is much much better than earlier generations. Buttons are big and easy to toggle. Sound quality, both earpiece and speaker, are excellent. The digital camera gets the job done but it's mediocre quality. Not recommended if you are looking to snap a picture of something important. Has a stylish, not flashy, look and the blue readout is actually quite cool. Recommend if you are purchasing second hand, probably could do better for about the same money buying another model new.

2 out of 5 stars Flippin Problems with this model phone   May 15, 2008
i850 2 wks after received--would power off everytime I closed it & also during calls. Sprint gave me HUGE hassel when trying to get it replaced. On phone with them 2:15 PM until 4:43 PM, went through LONG list of people who couldn't make a managerial decision and would transfer me to someone else or just keep me on hold extremely long time. One tried to sell me more expensive phone and telling me they DID NOT HAVE another i850 IN STOCK--I called back and another salesman said i850 was IN STOCK and did I want one. During final call I requested anyone in management and a lady finally took care of my call properly and 2-day expressed new phone, no charge.

The aesthetic design and ease of use is lovely.
The durability and value is LOUSY.
I'll post again if replacement i850 is faulty as well.

1 out of 5 stars the flip   November 19, 2007
The phone itself is very sleek however the quality of the phone is terrible. Just like most of the negative reviews I have trouble with the flip going in and out. The only suggestion was to but the flip part which indeed will be more than the phone cost me. That is ridiculous. I think the phone is nice looking but I wouldn't recommend for anyone purchasing a new phone. Overall I am dissatisfied and feel as though I was tricked. THe phone sucks.

2 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Phone but...   September 21, 2007

The reason I use Nextel's service is that I get better coverage here in N. Florida. The telephone was on special but I can see why. The telephone gives good service and I do use the camera which is OK but the pictures come out a little small even at large setting. BUT I would not recommend this phone for one key reason: The charger/computer connector. I have bad thoughts about the designer that created the plug at the bottom of the phone. The waterproof cover gets in the way of plugging-in andf you have to fiddle with it until you get a connect. I would not have another phone that uses this connection system...:(

1 out of 5 stars THE WORST   September 3, 2007

First of all, I'd like to say that I don't personally know anyone who's completely satisfied with Nextel, their phones, and their service. Dropped calls, frozen screens, random shut downs are regular occurances for a Nextel phone, and trust me, I've been through quite a couple of them. They all eventually break down. Anyone defending Nextel is probably working for them, or hasn't been with Nextel for over a year. We just purchased two of the i855 phones (our i830 had finally given out after less than 7 months) and one phone has already frozen and will not turn back on. In fact, at a restaruant the other day I over heard a woman stating that Nextel phones were built to break-down after a certain time (makes sense, the customer would need to buy another one). I assume the person on the other line asked her how she new such a thing because she responded "Well, I used to work for them." It's disgusting how they take advantage of their customers. After explaining the problems to customer services, they continue to bribe you with better, "newer" phones in exchange for the promise of a 2-year contract with them. Their service is horrible, and you're phone will eventually give you problems. I PROMISE THAT!
