Amazon.com Product Description
With the i275, Nextel injects their line of powerful phones with a serious dose of fun. With a built-in VGA camera, multimedia messaging, downloadable games, a speakerphone, and support for Nextel's legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie service, this phone is all about lots of fun and plenty of functionality.

Design
The i275's candybar form factor sports a large, 128 x 128 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. The speakerphone unit is located on the rear of the phone, as is the VGA (640 x 480) camera unit. Meanwhile, the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. There's also a 2.5-millimeter headset jack for connecting a hands-free headset.

Calling Features
The i275's built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. More polyphonic ringtones can be added via download from the Nextel Online service. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names, while a built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. And if you have an emergency, the i275's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i275 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone, or with entire groups of Direct Connect users. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America, Canada and Latin America. With the i275's powerful Direct Talk function you can also communicate in walkie-talkie mode when you're not even connected to the network. The system works anywhere, anytime between compatible phones within a range of up to 6 miles (range will vary based on terrain and conditions). Direct Talk provides a reliable back-up communications tool in times of emergency, network outage, or when traveling to remote areas not under Nextel coverage such as hiking, cruise vacations or inside buildings. And last but not least, the i275 features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The i275 features MMS-based support for mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text, images and audio messaging. When used with the phone's built-in camera, MMS messaging opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i275, as well. Nextel's optional Nextel Online package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Nextel Online also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone. Also, because the i275 is GPS-enabled, you can use Nextel's location-based safety services like Mobile Locator, which allows you to locate a friend or family member's phone location at anytime, right from your computer. And finally, the i275 ships with a calendar, as well as a time and date clock.

Vital Statistics
The Motorola i275 weighs 4.6 ounces and measures 4.8 x 1.93 x .98 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 165 minutes of digital talk time, and up to 101 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the IDEN 800 frequency. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

4 out of 5 stars Actually about the phone!   June 17, 2006
I upgraded to this phone from the i205. So far I am happy overall with the phone itself, but some of the "extras" are annoying. The Sleep Mode, where the screen goes dark, bugs me to no end. I keep thinking my phone is off, when it is not. And you can't attach a picture to a persons name in your phone so that it pops up when they call (unless I just haven't discovered how to do it. I read the manual cover to cover). The camera takes nice pics (haven't figured out how to zoom in, if I can). The non standatd ringtones that come with the phone (3 of em) are ok. 2 are not quite loud enough (but very cool) and the 3rd is just really loud. I like the "Disco Lights", it catches your attention if you don't hear the ring. Music sound quality is very good, if you like music ringtones. Navigaiting the menus took a little getting used to, but I am getting to like it. You can personalize each button, which I thought was neat. At first, when I talked on the phone, it sounded like people were at the end of a tunnel. I think that is a result of digitizing the signal. You get used to it quickly. The screen is bright (except when in bright sunlight) and you can change the palatte colors. The games, Tetris and Bowling are pretty good, but Tetris is demo only. The standard battery doesn't last quite as long as expected. I had to recharge it the first day after the inital 12 hour charge. New toy, had to play with it! It does seem to get used up pretty quickly, but the phone is doing a lot of stuff, even when it is just sitting there. I would recommend getting the more powerful battery available for this phone if you use it a lot everyday. For me, it is fine to charge every couple of days or so. I don't make a ton of calls. I like it and am glad I upgraded.

P.S. I have had Nextel for 7 or 8 years and I've never had a problem with any of my phones (this is my 3rd one). When I have had to call customer service, they have always been friendly and helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Warranty? What warranty?   December 22, 2005

I had been very happy with my Motorola phone until the battery started losing its charge within a day, even when the phone was turned off. The friendly but incompetent customer support kept me on the phone for an average of 40 minutes for the repeated calls trying to figure out the problem. After the phone had finally been sent to their technical service center, they returned it to me that the phone was irreperable "due to customer abuse." I have done nothing to that phone that could have caused any damage (unless using it to make phone calls counts as "customer abuse"), but got the same comment, without explanation after I had sent the phone in for a second time for reevaluation. It seems that Motorola is just trying to get out of fixing or replacing the phone free of charge under warranty. You'll be fine with a Motorola phone as long as it works. After that, you're on your own.

DO NOT let Mr. Hugh's comments above influence your decision about Nextel. He evidently didn't do his homework before he purchased the phone. Ever complaint he had could be had with any phone company if they didn't have service in your area. Nextel can't help it if he lives in some God-forsaken place out in no-where.

I had Nextel in Atlanta for many years with outstanding service before moving into the NE Georgia Mountains which had no Nextel service. Our only service provider was Cingular or Verizon; So I went with Cingular. BIG mistake. Although they had good coverage their customer service was the worst. I was stuck with Cingular for 8 years until last year when Nextel came to the rescue and started expanding and put towers in my area. I bought my all my family Nextel phones (I bought my daughter this one)and we couldn't be happier. And after seeing the good experience we were having my, the rest of my family and friends have also dumped Cingular and Verizon.

The only drawback to Nextel (now it is Sprint)is the cost of the plans are a little more, but the quality and service make of for the difference.

My problems with nextel did not stop when I canceled my service. I will get to the problems with the service. When I went to get a new phone a day before my contract expired, I of course wanted to keep my number. So as I went to get my Cingular phone (highly recommended), I had the old number switched to my new number. Today, I get in the mail my nextel statement for the month with a $200 early termination even though I had not canceled my service, but had simply got a new phone and switched my number over. This was on icing on the cake after 2 years of absolutely amazingy bad service from nextel. In my town, not a small town by any means, there are very few places that have any service. In the largest subdivision, you cannot get service anywhere. I constantly get comments from people trying to reach me that get the classic nextel line...Please hold while the nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located. Most of the time I would not even recieve incoming calls, calls would go straight to my voice mail. Not only would I not get the calls, but often I would not even get the voice mails until days or even weeks later. When I did actually take calls (and call out), I cannot count the number of times I've had my call dropped. I recieved so many different error messages sometimes I wonder if they just spend all their time at nextel thinking of different error messages to program into their phones. That brings me to the selling point of nextel, the famed and well-loved direct connect feature. This is an absolute joke. Direct connect only works MAYBE half the time I tried to use it. Even then, in the middle of the conversation I would be greeted by the loud beep of my phone telling me I wont be talking to that person anymore. Of course, I would expect nothing less from the nextel network. Text messaging with nextel is next to impossible. If it did not take hours to send or recieve a message, it took days, or maybe didn't even come at all. The internet access was fine, it the rare instance that it worked. Of course, when you don't have service, you don't get the internet access either. I was constantly getting the message "network not available". Calling and trying to complain to nextel is futile. Trying to get through to customer service takes forever and once you get through they do nothing. My experience with nextel has been nothing short of a disaster and I write this trying to warn anyone considering nextel. Stick with Verizon or Cingular and you will be much happier in the end. Don't make the same mistake I did.
