5 out of 5 stars Great Chair   June 2, 2007

The chair is absolutely wonderful! We stained it and it looks incredible. The thicker wood definetly makes a difference. We'll probably get a couple more for when guests come over.

5 out of 5 stars Great chair - Far more comfortable than I thought   May 27, 2006

I ordered two of these, not sure what to expect. They arrived promptly and in fine condition. Assembling the first chair took an hour, the next chair took 20 minutes.

The ottoman pictured does not add a great deal of comfort, unless you have short legs (from the knee down), then you'll appreciate it.

The chair is perfectly contoured, and I've now spent a few hours sitting in it without even noticing it doesn't have a pad. It is extremely sturdy, no creaks or wobbles, thanks to the glue/screw concept. The angle of the back and gentle fan curve makes it even more comfortable.

I don't recommend leaving this unfinished, though. Although it arrives fairly well-sanded, any moisture will raise the grain of the wood and leave it slightly rough.

Wanting a dark finish, I chose Minwax Mahogany oil-based stain, applied with a rag. After staining twice, I sanded lightly and brushed on 3 coats of Minwax Helmsman Spar varnish, sanding between the 1st and second coats very well with 220 grit paper. It took 1.5 quarts of stain, and 1.5 quarts of varnish to cover two chairs/ottoman, and the small end table as described.

Staining two chairs and two ottom(en) took me two hours, not including hanging them up from wire. It took me 30 minutes to sand each chair first, then about 30 minutes to brush on each coat of varnish. The last coat I only sanded the primary surfaces, like slats and armrests.

Some suggestions for finishing:

1) Most of the pieces have pre-drilled holes, so you can hang them up to stain (I used some 14-gage electrical wire). Saves a ton of time that way.

2) Got to sand them sometime, but I found it worked best after the stain, to bring down the grain, then between coats of varnish. I used 220 both times, since the wood is pretty well prepped when it arrives. Probably should have done the sanding prior to assembly, though.

3) I chose to assemble after staining, and before varnish. It's a toss-up, I suppose, but I liked having it all held together before the finish coat.

4) Use Gorilla glue instead of Titebond II (in the instructions). In my opinion it holds better and expands to fill the slight gaps in the construction.

So buy with confidence! These are a great deal even with the extra finishing time.
