Designed for use with large-scale deep-fry pots, the electric oil pump from Eastman Outdoors extends the life of cooking oil and cuts down on cleanup mess. The pump transfers oil from a cooking pot to a storage container, with the option of filtering particulates along the way to make oil cleaner for reuse. Powered by an AC adapter, the device takes oil in through a long nozzle, pumps it through a filter cap, and releases it through a hose. Assembly and use is simple and tidy, though some dripping is inevitable. The pump is not suitable for purifying oil or for filtering other liquids, and it should only be used when oil is at or below 90 degrees F. --Emily Bedard

 Poor Design, Buyer Beware November 21, 2008
Wow. This unit is one of the most worthless items I've ever bought. I fried a turkey last night, and this morning I tried to pump/filter the oil. I've had some bad luck with filtering oil by hand (big mess), so I was really excited to use this pump. It pumped out maybe 1/4" of oil from the pot (which is literally a drop in the bucket) before it stopped pumping oil. After taking the unit halfway apart, I noticed the problem. The impeller shaft would fall out from where it is attached to the motor after turning the unit on. The vibrations from the motor would essentially shake it out of place within a few seconds. There is nothing that holds the impeller shaft to the motor, so the metal shaft is very easily shaken out of the hole it fits into. The metal shaft contacts the oil, so basically you end up lubricating the metal rod, which makes it easier for it to fall out each subsequent time. This is a very poor design. Also, the plastic impeller at the end of the rod is not secured to the rod and will pop off. AND, the plastic cage that you put the filter around doesn't have a groove that allows you to clip the filter in place properly. Sure, there's a spot at the top of the cage where you're supposed to clip the filter on, but the clip falls off very easily. I have no idea why they wouldn't put a groove of some sort to allow the filter to be fastened more securely. I ended up using a rubber band in combination with the clip, which seemed like it would work pretty well. I really hope I got a defective unit and that this company is not selling a product that is designed so poorly. I'll definitely be returning this stupid thing, and if I can't get one that works I'm going to try a different brand or build one myself. If you buy this, be aware that you might get really frustrated and want to break this thing in half over your knee.
 Decent, But Better Products Out There November 20, 2007
Unlike some of the other reviewers, my product did not malfunction. I have in fact used it for 2 years and have used it 5-6 times each year. The reason I rate this so low is because while the product would pump the majority of the oil, some of the oil would leak out of where the hose connects to the pump. Additionally what you do not see is that you have to physically hold the hose there (my pump did not come with anything to seal the hose to the pump).
While it would pump out the majority of the oil, once you got to about 1-2 inches left, because of the rounded shape at the bottom it becomes very challenging to tilt the pot containing the dirty oil, hold the hose, and pump the oil out. Once finished, the cleanup begins. Because the oil slightly leaks you have to clean the entire device as well as any counter or floor space you are using.
Since at the time I purchased this, there were no other options I had to suck it up and deal with it knowing that it was still better than trying to lift the pot, pour it through a funnel, and possibly make a bigger mess. That thought process just changed this year. King Kooker (Amazon sells them under the name Metal Fusion; the exact same though) has one that is sealed on the side and has a flat filter base. I'd be willing to bet someone in their organization used the Eastman and improved upon it. I haven't used it as of yet, but I will be doing a review right after Thanksgiving....
Whatever you decide, don't give up on turkey frying... Absolutely the best way to enjoy turkey!!

I am already on my second unit. I managed to get three uses out of the first one. I should have ordered the second when I saw the first one start smoking halfway through draining the turkey fryer. (No, the oil was not hot, it was at room temp.!) THe only reason I gave a second star is that it did work well, once. I really wish Eastman would re-design this to make it durable. I've given up and use PVC tubing from Home depot and a funnel with cheesecloth to get the residuals out. Good luck to anyone who wants to use this a second time!

This pump is a step backwards from the previous two battery version (this one has three batteries). The additional battery make it too heavy on the top so it doesn't sit well in the pot. It has a tendency to tip over, or at least shift from the position you set it at.I would agree with some of the other reviews that it seems to loose power after the first use. The thicker the oil, the harder a time it has. If you heat the oil before filtering, it works much better. Note that you don't want to get the oil too hot - perhaps nothing hotter than 100 degrees. I cracked the clear tube in my old two-battery one by running boiling water through it (requiring the purchase of this model). If you can find the older version, I highly recommend it, but the three battery version is definately a step backwards.

This is a must have for anyone who has trouble lifting 5 gallons of oil in a slippery cooker. The pump is the same as the ones that pump kerosene. So you can get the same thing cheap locally if you don't want to wait for shipping. Fast, self priming, easy.*** Don't try to move hot oil *** Do turn off flames *** Hot oil will quickly melt the plastic pump and the plastic will stick to the sides of the fryer and ruin your oil and machine.
