Amazon.com Review Made of rugged cast iron, this classic Dutch oven not only slow-bakes traditional camp food such as chicken and dumplings, but thanks to the included aluminum basket can be used to steam clams, boil corn on the cob, or deep-fry fish with everything lifting out easily for draining. The relatively flat cast-iron lid is ringed by a one-inch lip that holds coals for the "oven" effect, and features a loop handle that can be hooked easily by a lid lifter. Because this model is designed without legs, the oven can sit comfortably on a grill or stovetop if desired. The perforated aluminum basket and the Dutch oven each feature a wire handle that stays upright at a 45-degree angle away from the heat, and swings down to the side for compact storage. The pot measures 12 by 5 inches and features an integral tab handle on one side that adds leverage when pouring food or liquid out of the pot. Before the first use, the cast-iron Dutch oven and lid should be seasoned at least once and preferably several times. This will help prevent rusting and creates a nonstick finish. After washing and drying thoroughly, the cookware should be coated with solid vegetable shortening, such as lard or bacon fat (not butter or margarine). Let the pot 'bake' in a 300-degree-F oven for one hour, then remove and wipe off the excess. Spraying with a non-stick shortening after each use can also help season the pan. Most cast-iron cookware can be scrubbed clean by hand without detergents and then should be dried immediately. Bayou Classic makes a full range of heavy-duty cookers and cookware for the outdoor chef. --Ann Bieri

Difficult to clean November 1, 2008 I have to agree with Frank Yee. Extremely difficult to clean. It is coated with wax and I spent 30 minutes scrubbing it with a green "scratchy" pad and dish detergent and still could not get all the wax off - it sticks in all of the pores of the metal. So I put it in the oven at 300 degrees and 1 hour later it still smoking. My kids are complaining about the stinky fog in the house and have gone to the basement to escape. If I knew what I now know I would have purchased an American made product and paid a little extra.
Bayou Classic 7460 8-1/2-Quart Cast-Iron Dutch Oven and Lid with Perforated Aluminum Basket October 25, 2008
-I appreciate the shipping, it was very quick. -Bayou Classic 7460 8-1/2-Quart Cast-Iron Dutch Oven and Lid with Perforated Aluminum Basket As you seen the pot in the picture that the lid had crocodile on it which I wanted to get. I sent it back because of the different lid without a crocodile. They sent me the same as the one I sent it back. I don't have time to send this last one again and I was very very disappointed to buy something online with this bayou Classic company. The pots have the same name and reference number , but the pot I got is different than the one I saw in the picture.
Don't let the price fool you - just as good as Lodge! July 5, 2008 What's a camping trip without peach cobbler fresh from a cast iron Dutch oven? Last year when we wanted to take our daughter on her first camping trip, we knew we had to find a cast iron Dutch oven - but the prices were through the roof - especially with shipping included. This one was not only a great price, but with free shipping through Amazon, it was a steal (in fact, I'd guess this has to be one of those items Amazon loses money on bc of the shipping...). The quality is comparable with Lodge and we've got no complaints. We don't plan on frying in it, so I use the aluminum fry basket in my automotive parts washer :-)
great cast iron cookware January 8, 2008 this product is great! i bought it for my fiance that loves to make stews and soups and he absolutely loves it. it is super roomy and also serves as a deep fryer.
Bayou Dutch Oven January 7, 2008 Ordered this dutch oven for chef son who has come to enjoy cast iron cooking the best, and he especially loved all the Cajun references on the box. Looking forward to getting it seasoned.
