Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Works well and saves time   October 15, 2008
I bought this 'bare saw' (no battery or charger) because I already own the trimmer, weed wacker and blower, which came with 3 batteries and a charger. My existing batteries fit right into the chainsaw, and work fine.

I've already used it to remove a large dead bush, and cut up some branches for kindling. I do not own a gas chain saw, but do own an electric, which I will now sell. It was too cumbersome to drag the cord around, especially to the rear of my one acre property. The B&D does just as good a job as the electric, although it will never have adequate power for a big job. But, if you're looking for a nice small saw, and have multiple batteries, I would recommend. If you're going to count on a one-battery set up, you'll probably be disappointed, as it eats power fast. This saw cuts nicely, and is cord free, and light weight. Also, very quiet, and feels sturdy.

5 out of 5 stars Great product if you have appropriate expectations   August 29, 2008
I like the whole line of B&D 18V cordless yard tools: Weed Trimmer, Hedge Trimmer, Blower, and Chain Saw. The chain saw is clearly a homeowner model, and the quality reflects it. That doesn't mean the quality is bad, mind you, only that it isn't professional grade. And that's just fine - I'm not a professional logger. It was easy to put together, plenty powerful for my 6-8 trees of heaven in my backyard with trunk diameter's of ~6" - 8" and height of ~20' - 30', and a single battery held enough juice to drop them all and break them down to size to fit in my yardwaste bin over the next few weeks. Very handy tool for non-professional use, at a good price point, with modular design to match the whole line's battery packs. All in all a very good product.

4 out of 5 stars Worked for me   August 23, 2008
I just finished cleaning out part of my small woods with this chainsaw. It made quick and quiet work of everything I threw at it. I had a 5-6 inch ash blown down that I bucked into 6 foot logs, limbing as well. That exhausted the half charged 18V that I had on it. Then I threw on my silver 18V and tightened the chain a bit. I finished the tree, bucked and limbed another 3 inch tree into a few 4 foot lengths, trimmed a few large grapevines, cut some other small trees. That was it for that first run.
I was impressed with the saw. I am thinking I will have a go at the larger 8 inch downed tree back further in the woods. That might take some doing, since this thing is not large.
One note: Others have commented that the oiling mechanism leaks. I took another reviewer's advice and just bought a $6 oiling can with my chain oil before I even began. I squirt on oil after every couple of cuts and all is well. Little mess, no problem. Not perfect, but no $60 tool is.
BTW, I bought the bare tool and my silver battery on Amazon for $6 less than the combo of the tool with a regular battery. I do not see the silver battery any more, but you might want to see if the separate tools are less than the combo. (As of this review, the combo is a good deal)
If my woods was closer to my house, I would have just used an electric saw. If you have to go more than the range of an electric cord, then this saw might be just right for you.
FYI, bare saw means just that. You get it in a white box: saw, instruction book, chain cover.

The best feature of this tool - it is quiet.

5 out of 5 stars Great value   June 20, 2008

This item is the same chainsaw that normally sells for about $99 (sometimes a bit less when on sale) but does not include the battery or charger. If you have other B&D 18v tools, you probably already have a few batteries and chargers, so you can save a few bucks by just buying the bare tool. If, however, you don't have any 18v tools or just one or two, you're probably better off bying the full package since this item really goes through batteries quick!

It works well, is very easy to handle, and perfect for small jobs where a gas powered machine is just overkill. Unlike an electric you don't have to deal with an extension cord. The downside is power and work time. While great for pruning, you wouldn't want to tackle a decent size tree with this. Also, you'll want to keep a spare battery or two handy since you'll get about 10min cutting time before the battery runs out.

I have several 18v B&D cordless products -- their hedge trimmer, pole trimmer, pole washer, blower, and several hand tools. All the 18v batteries are interchangeable, making it very cost effective. While not built to stand up to contractor-style use, they are more than adequate for general homeowner use. Nice design, easy to use, and inexpensive -- can't beat that combo!
