Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Easy-view multi-lingual digital display with ready indicator light takes the guesswork out of ironing. The easy-access controls and ergonomically designed fabric dial make ironing an effortless task. Smart Steam technology automatically generates the right amount of steam based on the fabric type selected. Durable Ceramic-Glide soleplate reduces static electricity making it ideal for ironing all fabric types.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Iron ever   December 2, 2008
I bought this iron and within a few weeks, it had stopped producing steam. It was heating up fine, so I think there was some sort of digital error with the steam regulation, since it is supposed to have this "Smart Steam" system. Black and Decker replaced the iron, although that took over four months, since they apparently forgot to ship the replacement for a long time, and I had to nag them a couple of times. I did have to pay the couple of bucks shipping for the plug they wanted as proof, not the whole iron. So, the replacement iron also failed to produce steam after a couple of months. This means I didn't just get a faulty or defective one the first time. There is some sort of design flaw that causes this problem. I'm going to get the iron replaced again, but I'm only going to use it as an emergency backup, since I plan to buy a different iron in the meantime. Altogether, it was a complete hassle having to go through all of this, just to end up buying a different iron. My advice, and I'm a costume professional, so I have lots of experience with irons and pressing:
If you don't actually need all those bells and whistles, you're better off with an iron that contains no digital features at all. Just plug in, turn on, make steam. Good luck finding one, however.

4 out of 5 stars no more overheat!   October 18, 2008

Pros: It can control the heat by turning the node to what fibers you are ironing. It is very easy. No More Overheat on the delicate fibers! It can be auto cleaning. It will beeps your when its heat is reached and ready for you to iron. It can auto turn off when you forgot to remove the plug!

Cons: It is a bit heavier than the normal one. It takes a bit longer to heat the iron. And it is not cordless.

1 out of 5 stars This was a poor choice   October 11, 2008

We bought this iron after having 2 Rowenta irons fail in 6 months. At first my wife was very happy with this iron, but after only 3 months and light use she noticed water leaking from the base plate. Closer inspection showed that the iron base plate had cracked completely across the middle. Being only 3 months old we contacted B&D for warranty replacement. We are now fighting with them as they say the iron is only under warranty for 1 year from date of purchase and is not covered. We guess that they are using "new" math to figure out that June to September is more than one year. We'll see ..........

Black $ Decker D1700 Digital Edge steam iron is one of the best irons that I have tried. The Ceramic sole plate, is the best ever. It steams and irons like a dream. I would give this iron as a gift to friends and family members. I highly recommend is iron to everyone. It's light weight, and small hand friendly.

The auto off feature is somewhat annoying since I take my time putting my clothes on the ironing board.

Overall the product does what I expect it to.
