Attach System Fails October 4, 2008 I have both an Atlantis 1600 and an Atlantis 1800. Good boxes. Problem is with the attach system. While simple, it was probably designed by a Swedish monkey. The part that sits on the cross bar of my roof rack fails at the screw attach point. It is a very weak fitting and held in place by one screw. The monkey would tell you this is not a bearing point for load. Why then does it always fail in this spot?? Get this - the replacement part is $2.60 from Thule direct AND they want $20 for shipping... Now that's a business model!
Damaged in shipping and replaced no problem. August 21, 2008 My wife and I ordered this just before a family reunion so that we could actually get there with all of our stuff (and kids). While the kids could sleep in it just fine, I recommend it for light luggage, water skis, sleeping bags, ect. Ours arrived damaged by the shipping company. We contacted amazon via the website and the next day they shipped a new one and sent UPS to pick up the damaged one. The second one arrived without any problems and in time for the trip. The adjustments are super easy and even though it says you have two people to mount it, if you're tuff you can do it alone. It works great and we are very satisfied with it.
Amazon fell down on this one July 24, 2008 Cannot rate the product, because it arrived nearly 2 weeks after my vacation, which was 3 weeks after Amazon (verbally) and their trucking company (verbally) promised it would be delivered.
Amazon could not cancel or change the order the night it was placed, because it was "shipped". "But don't worry, it will absolutely be there on time".
Trucking company could not track the order for days, because they had "not yet received it from Amazon". "But don't worry, we'll get it to you 2 days after we receive it."
When all was said an done, nobody followed through and it nearly ruined our family trip. (Found the only similar item in stock at a local store, the day before vacation.)
Amazon delivery commitment trust value is way down in my book.
No restitution from anyone!
Thule Atlantis 1800 is fabulous November 15, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the Atlantis 1800 for a long road trip but have since found it so handy that I've left it on the car. Once I had the factory load bars on our Volvo Cross Country set to the right positions, it mounted up in a matter of minutes (with the help of a neighbor to lift b/c it's big, though not heavy). I had to set it forward enough so the tailgate could open fully without hitting the back of the cargo box, but the box doesn't overhang the front. It's a terrific size for the car.
Rock solid and easy to access from either side of the car. Contents stay dry even in the hardest rains. Gas mileage does not seem to have suffered appreciably due to its relative low wind resistance. It's more expensive than other options I was considering, but now that I have had it for a month or so I'm glad I went with the Atlantis.
Large, great cargo box November 13, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This box is a bit larger than we expected (no excuse for that with the dimentions clearly posted), and we can't pull our SUV into the garage with the box mounted, but it's absolutely a great item. We've matched the locks to our current Thule rack products, so every component is keyed identically. We originally were looking for ski mounts, but the dealer we worked with recommended we look into cargo boxes. He said they would house our skis, boots, and more, and certainly offer more flexibility than a limiting rack. We're very pleased. Also, after some price shopping, we found that Amazon offered the best pricing. The only drawback was the delivery. Amazon contracts with a trucking company (EGL Logistics), and they repeatedly missed delivery times and were pretty insistent about someone being home to accept delivery. I would be skeptical about using EGL again, but that's who Amazon contracts with when they ship something this size and use "super saver" free shipping. All in all, a really good buy.
