4 out of 5 stars If sturdy is what you're looking for...   November 22, 2008
As the product description says, this is aluminum. It does fit my 17" laptop with room to spare. I purchased a black one and the finish is well polished and not dull. The construction is very durable and should last a long time. Laptop heat has been significantly reduced. Fan noise is heard but does not irritate or disrupt movie watching experience. It makes a subtle and quiet breeze. For the price, i am happy with the purchase because the amount paid is well balanced by its design and construction; hence the 4 stars. In other words, anything over $40 and is plastic is not cost-effective for me.

Downside: Not designed for mobility. This is definitely a "put-in-place" cooler. It does fold in half, but the weight, bulk, and edges does not suit the traveling man/woman. Because it folds in half, not ideal for placing on your lap unless you have something underneath to prevent it from folding into you. Can be troublesome and heavy to place a laptop and this cooler on top of your lap.

4 out of 5 stars A Cooler Pad   November 19, 2008
ThinkPad, that is. I didn't think I'd need the cooler, but I'm real glad I got this one, for it works exactly as advertised. And as others observe: It's rugged and thus isn't something to lug around or drop; it's not whisper-quiet but I'd rather know it's running; its efficiency is somewhat dictated by the configuration of your laptop's fan and heat exhaust; the USB hub sometimes acts a little flaky but show me a hub that doesn't (hint: be sure to properly unplug the USB hardware you'd plugged in); and AC power is the only way to go, for the cooler will otherwise drain your extended battery pack faster than Dr Doom.

3 out of 5 stars Ecxellent cooling, but the USB ports don't work   November 6, 2008
This stand does an excellent job of cooling my laptop-I have an Acer Aspire 6920-6422-not super demading but it gets pretty hot. This works great with it except for the USB ports-not so great. If you want a device that adds the extra USB-look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product   November 3, 2008
I have a big 17in laptop... Gateway FX model... this product works perfectly for me... cools well... give just the correct angle... adds several USB ports. A great product!

5 out of 5 stars super cool surfing   October 29, 2008
I have an older model Dell laptop which sucks on multiple levels, but the heat this thing generates is top on the "why it sucks" list. I had bought a cheaper laptop fan that only moderately cooled, and eventually the plug on the back broke off (my fault).

I procrastinated in ordering a new fan, however my laptop kept powering off because it was overheating. Off to the internet I went (on the desktop) and found this laptop cooler.

It works, brilliantly, and even makes my hand quite cool when I have it on the mouse close to the side of the cooler. It connects to the laptop via either a dc/usb cord or a usb/usb cord. There are 5 total usb ports on the back. The fan speed is adjustable with a dial on the side. The cooler is higher in the back providing a comfortable slant for the laptop.

To see just how well it worked, I ran a graphics intensive game that had previously been the main cause of the overheating and shut down. The other night when the laptop shut down, I felt the bottom of the laptop and it was uncomfortably hot.

Today, however, after running the game for well over 30 minutes, the bottom of the laptop was actually cooler than if it had only been used for internet surfing. The noise of the fans (three of them) is fine for me, as it works so well cooling, I don't mind a minor whirring sound. It's really not an issue. When you use a lot of fans, you expect some sound.

This was a bit pricier than I initially felt comfortable with, but I decided to take a chance, based on the reviews, and thus far I'm quite thrilled with it!
